Windows mini Build Challenge

Remember that form factor is the feature.

Build an equivalent Windows PC. Here's the best I could do:

LOGIC Supply

Logic Supply 3688 mini-ITX System
- Power Supply Morex 60 Watt Power Supply
- Operating System Windows XP Home - English
- Motherboard EPIA MII 12000 1.2Ghz
- Memory 256MB PC2100/DDR266 RAM
- Hard Disk 2.5" 40GB Seagate 5400rpm
- Color Silver
- CD / DVD Drive Panasonic CW-8123-B Slotloading CD-RW / DVD
- Build and test this system

Total: $710

The Cupid 3688 is the closest I could come in price, size, and style. It's still bigger and slower than the Mac mini and is $210 more!

you forgot to mention that the above computer does not have an operating system, which the proper equvilant to Mac OS X is Windows XP Professional. That would be another 150-200 bucks depending on how you get your OS. (Acutally if you go educational, i think its around $89)

And does not include a word processing or presentation suite, which the equvilant would be Office Standard, and that adds at least another $100-200 bucks.

Oops, it does Have XP Home lol. Sorry I missed that. But no office suite. (and XP home really isnt a one to one, but that could slide)

True about Office applications and the iLife apps kick the snot out of the Microsoft rip offs.

It's a joke to compare iMovie to Microsoft Movie Maker. And using Explorer to manage 1000s of Photos is painful.

Here is a few of the SFF PC systems various people have suggested on other sites:

I can imagine a lot of copycat PCs soon. Dell mini anybody.

The PCs will be better for some things but in the end the Mac will be much more popular. It's the same as the iPod.

Not sure why you guys are worried about whether or not you computer looks sexy. When was that last time you got laid because your computer was sexy. Come on people!

Sexy?

Lets just say that I have had people drawn to my very sexy new iMac. Without exageration, they want to touch it. I've never seen anything like it...

The Mac may or may not get you laid. But your average Mac user gets more action than your Doom III nut does. Keep those frag scores up boys.

Actually, my ipod and powerbook get me quite a bit of attention at the coffee shops. Well worth the price i think. Helps not to be playing Doom III as well.

Using a Mac certainly will not help you get laid - however, treating a woman like crap will! Trust me.

Treating anybody like crap will make you feel like crap. Trust me. Manipulating others gives short term rewards but over the long term it will ruin your life.

Too funny thinking about the Mac vs PC and getting laid. I get all the loving I need and more, and I own both - perhaps that's the ticket - yeah! Did I mention I also own a red stapler?

Joining the party a little late.

I can't remember such a furor over a Mac product introduction, it seems to me, since the MacClassic. Macsters & PCers are going round & round on many boards about the pluses (or minuses depending on your computing orientation) of the Mini. Basically bashing the $h!t out of each other for no real good reason.

I think Apple has done a pretty good thing introducing an entry-level product to the "commodity computer" consumer segment. It'll be very interesting to see if a "cheap" introduction to OSX will lead to an increase in marketshare, or at least increased sales of other high-end Macs down the road.

All hardware configuration arguments (about the Mini) aside, I think all this fuss is just another battle in the "MY OS is better than YOUR OS" wars.

I'd like to be able to do a test where I could set up my rig to run as a dual-boot, XP & OSX, to see if there is really an advantage to one OS over the other on my hardware.

Angel

As all minis are slightly different in shape and size (thanks toking tours the 'sledgehammer' technique employed in the factory!) this template is only made as a rough guide. Because of this, it's best to make a cardboard model of the centre console to trial-fit it in your car and chop all the bits and bobs off that you need to! PS. This particular model (as you'll see later) is designed to house a cup-holder and coin drawer not a stereo so the slot marked will need to be adjusted to your personal needs.
